R. Michael Hackley is president of Michael Hackley Architects PC, a full service architectural and commercial interior design firm located in Columbia, Maryland. In business for 28 years, Michael Hackley has specialized in retail store design with recent projects at Columbia Mall that include Edward Arthur Jewelers, Aromi d’ Italia restaurant, April Cornell, Great Wraps restaurant, Sweet Treat restaurant, Natural Nails Salon & Cosmetics, Great Earth Vitamins, joive de’ vivre cosmetics and General Growth Properties Public Safety and Mall Management Office.
Other commercial office interior design projects include law firms, medical office suites, the corporate headquarters for the Kennedy Family in New York City, and Special Olympics International headquarters in Washington, DC. In addition, Michael Hackley has provided facility management design/drawings for the Rouse Company/General Growth Properties and retail store design for tenants at Columbia Mall, Harborplace Gallery in Baltimore City. We have been working with Starbucks Coffee Company in the Mid-atlantic region, completing interior renovations and upgrades. We are currently working on 5 volunteer fire stations in the Maryland area, all of which are high profile due to their size and locations in the metro area. Michael Hackley Architects is also currently designing a Memorial for the Maryland Fallen Police Officers, the site for this project will be in downtown Annapolis, Maryland. We recently completed the design and construction of the National Fallen FireFighters Memorial Chapel in Emittsburg, Maryland. This project is located on federal property in western Maryland, and is funded by contributions to the foundation.
Our firm is well trained in many various types of design and construction, including: retail, food service, office space planning & design, fire/EMS service facilities, custom residential design, specialty projects, and we recently completed the design & construction of the executive management office for BWI/Baltimore Washington International Airport in Maryland. Our expertise and qualifications are outstanding in the architectural design industry, we have worked with the Kennedy family for their new corporate office building in New York City and the new Special Olympics International Headquarters in Washington DC.

Our Operations Manager Matthew Unkle was a former Simon Property Group Operations Director at several properties in the past. He worked at The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City in Arlington and Virginia Center Commons in Richmond VA and Golden Ring Mall in Baltimore, MD. He has since been with our firm for over 6 years, and has extensive experience in mall construction, operations management and retail environments.
